Head of Engineering

Responsibilities

• Define technical vision, architecture, and roadmap for a privacy-first, production-ready platform that ingests clinical data, wearables, and genomics-related data.
• Lead vendor evaluation and integration strategy (build vs. buy) for EHR/data-ingestion rails and third‑party data platforms and APIs.
• Design and implement robust security, encryption, and data governance approaches for genetic and clinical data to meet HIPAA and other regulatory/privacy requirements.
• Translate product requirements into engineering scope, timelines, and cost estimates; prioritize work to balance time-to-demo versus production readiness.
• Act as a hands‑on senior engineer/product lead when needed — review code, design APIs, and validate technical deliverables.
• Recruit, onboard, and oversee execution teams (onshore, near‑shore, offshore), or work with existing external engineering partners to ensure high-quality, maintainable delivery.
• Serve as the primary technical liaison to clinicians, founders, and advisors — communicate tradeoffs, risks, and recommended implementation paths.
• Create testing, deployment, and monitoring strategies to ensure reliability and data integrity in production.
• Mentor and upskill engineers or contractors; put in place engineering best practices (CI/CD, code review, security audits).
• Provide clear, actionable research and vendor due-diligence outputs early on to inform fundraising and partnership decisions.

Qualifications

• Proven senior engineering or engineering leadership background (Head of Engineering / VP of Engineering or equivalent) with hands‑on technical experience.
• Demonstrated experience building or integrating healthcare data platforms that ingest EHRs, labs, wearables, or genomics-related data.
• Strong knowledge of data privacy, encryption, and regulatory requirements for health data (HIPAA compliance experience required).
• Experience evaluating and integrating third‑party health data vendors and APIs.
• Track record managing or coordinating distributed engineering teams (offshore/nearshore/onshore).
• Ability to scope projects, estimate effort, and communicate technical tradeoffs to non‑technical stakeholders.
• Comfortable balancing product strategy and hands‑on execution; able to dive into code and architecture reviews as needed.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills; collaborative, mission‑driven mindset aligned with health outcomes.
• Available for a fractional engagement (part-time, approximately 10–20 hours/week initially, with ability to ramp) and able to start on an agreed timeline.
