Executive Summary

The Future of Work Is Fractional. And It's Already Here.

Five years ago, I went fractional and never looked back. My startup didn't make it to the next round, and rather than chase more VC money or go back to a W2, I chose a different path: doing senior-level work on my terms, with companies that actually needed it. What surprised me most was how many experienced leaders were hungry for exactly the same thing.

That realization led me to create Go Fractional. Since 2023, we've grown into a network of 20,000 professionals and hiring companies, generated more than $10 million in fractional income, and built a Slack community of 2,000+ active leaders exchanging opportunities, sharing lessons, and building careers no traditional org chart could contain.

Their impact on the workforce is clear: the fractional model has evolved from a stopgap solution into a primary career identity. What was once seen as temporary or tactical is now strategic and intentional, central to how companies scale.

Fractional work has evolved from a stopgap solution into a primary career identity. What was once seen as temporary or tactical is now strategic and intentional, central to how companies scale.

Still, for many building innovative, fractional careers, critical questions remain: What should I charge? Who's actually hiring? How many clients can I work with at once? What does a sustainable fractional portfolio actually look like?

So, we built a report to answer them.

The 2026 State of Fractional Work Report presents an inside look at the trends, benchmarks, and insights shaping the fractional workforce. Based on real-time data from our Fractional Job Board and direct input from hundreds of fractional leaders, we uncover top verticals, geographies, hourly rates, contract structures, and more to help shed light on where this market stands and where it's heading.

Client acquisition is an evergreen issue.
90% of respondents named it as their biggest challenge. That's why we built the Go Fractional membership network and Fractional Job Board.
The 2-3-client portfolio is the market standard. Half of surveyed fractional professionals manage two or three clients at once.
Remote is the default operating model. Companies are designing senior fractional engagements to be location-agnostic.
