Fractional Controller
Job Description
The Role
We're hiring a fractional controller to own our finance function's design and architecture through a critical build phase. This is not a bookkeeping role - we have an outsourced bookkeeping team and modern tooling (QuickBooks Online, Ramp, Jobber, with LMN in implementation). What we're looking for is the person who designs the processes, enforces the close, and turns messy post-acquisition books into a finance function that runs on rails.
You'll work directly with the CEO and have real authority over how money moves through this business.
What You'll Own
Monthly close & reporting: Establish and enforce a close calendar (books closed by the 10th), own accuracy of job-level P&L, WIP, and unbilled revenue. Hold our outsourced bookkeeping team to defined SLAs.
Commitment controls: Implement PO discipline and job-coding standards so every subcontractor invoice, materials charge, and expense maps to a client and job before it hits the ledger.
Systems architecture: Design the LMN implementation from a finance perspective — chart of accounts mapping, QBO sync, invoice workflows, job costing structure — targeting a winter go-live.
Job cost accounting: Build proper job costing for our installation division, including labor burden rates, equipment costing, and margin reporting by project.
Team buildout: Help hire, onboard, and design the workflows for a full-time staff accountant who will run daily billing, AP/AR, and job-cost operations.
Ad hoc strategic finance: Support lender reporting, cash forecasting, and potential acquisition diligence.
Who We're Looking For
5+ years of accounting experience with at least 2 years in a controller or assistant controller seat
Construction, landscape, or field-services industry experience is strongly preferred — you understand job costing, WIP, progress billing, and seasonal cash cycles
Hands-on experience implementing or administering field-service management software (LMN, Aspire, BuilderTrend, ServiceTitan, or similar) and its integration with QuickBooks Online
Experience designing processes in a messy environment — you've cleaned up post-acquisition or fast-growth books before, not just maintained tidy ones
Comfortable holding external vendors (bookkeepers, accountants) accountable to standards you define
Direct communicator who will push back on the CEO when the numbers say so
Structure & Compensation
Approximately 10–15 hours per week, with flexibility around month-end close
Month-to-month engagement with potential to extend or expand as we grow. Retainer/compensation to be determined based on experience.
Primarily remote; occasional on-site time in West Concord, MA is a plus but not required
